(Dan Tri) – US intelligence believes that the new strain of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is `not man-made`, but still considers the hypothesis that the virus leaked from a laboratory in China.

`The intelligence community (IC) also agrees with the scientific consensus that Covid-19 was not man-made or genetically modified,` said a statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Tuesday.

“The intelligence community will continue to closely review information and intelligence to determine whether the (Covid-19) outbreak was caused by contact with infected animals or was the result of an incident at a laboratory.

The statement by the US national intelligence agency was made in the context that President Donald Trump and some White House officials are considering the hypothesis that a laboratory specializing in infectious disease research is in Wuhan city.

In recent days, the US administration has increased its criticism of China, accusing Beijing of acting slowly in preventing the spread of the virus, causing the epidemic to spread worldwide.

Some scientists believe that the new coronavirus comes from bats.

“We know that the Wuhan Institute of Virology is only about 13 kilometers from the wet market,” Mr. Pompeo said.

US officials said the US Embassy in Beijing expressed concerns about safety issues at the Wuhan laboratory in 2018, but has yet to find evidence that the virus originated from the facility.

According to NBC, the White House has directed US intelligence agencies to join forces to consider the possibility that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chinese government are hiding information about Covid-19.

President Trump is said to have mentioned the above direction during a press conference at the White House earlier this week.

“We are conducting very serious investigations,” Mr. Trump said.

China rejects the US accusations

The Chinese government on April 30 affirmed that any allegations that the new coronavirus leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan are `unfounded and completely fabricated`.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang quoted Director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology Yuan Zhiming as saying that this laboratory strictly follows biosafety procedures to prevent any pathogens from leaking out.

`I want to reiterate once again that the origin of the new coronavirus is a complex scientific issue and should be left to scientists and experts to research,` Mr. Canh Sang stated.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman also criticized American politicians who said Beijing was responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.
